Ooooookay let’s go for this one, which I always look at and then run away from because the whole double-tragedy caused by both and neither of them is painful and this image is - well.
It’s Emeraude’s ‘point of view’ - she is the subject of the image. She’s the one in colour, her eyes are open, she’s the one with her eyes open. Zagato is in the foreground, surrounding her head in the same way as he’s circling through all of her thoughts, but he’s greyscale - statue-like. Even his closed-eyed and slightly-smiling expression is passive. His swordpoint would be resting at his own feet, if they were in the image; it’s not pointed at anyone. This is Zagato as Emeraude remembers him, thinks of him - it’s basically also a giant arrow at the fact that Emeraude is the active one, in this whole situation; Zagato is reactive. Emeraude’s choice has taken away all his options, because the only thing he can and will do is defend her for as long as he can, no matter the cost. He looks like the active figure - like the one who has created the situation in Rayearth 1 by kidnapping Emeraude, in the same way as he looks like the subject of this piece by being in the foreground - manga often uses the enlarged figure floating behind the foreground one to show who/what a character is thinking of. But it’s a lie.
The composition of it also points straight to that twist; the shaping of Zagato’s robes and arm/sword and whatever-that-is (part of his future mashin or something??) extending from him seems to surround Emeraude, imprison her - but her hair is freely flowing out from behind him, in all directions. She’s not imprisoned in that frame, just appears to be so. And the direction of the sword isn’t threatening her head, but passes through her hand - Zagato’s sword is, essentially, in her hand, within her grasp - the pose of her fingers, half-open, combined with her expression, makes her look hesitant - because she could stop Zagato. She could stop all of this.
It is her choice, continually made, which drives everything which happens with them - and with Cephiro.
In the same vein, she’s surrounded by and thinking of Zagato - but she’s looking away from him. She is, in fact, looking at his sword - at what he has done, and will do.
And the other thing about the statue-like image of Zagato is, in fact, that it looks like a statue. A monument, or a tomb effigy - a knight with their eyes closed, holding their sword? One of the best-known images on european medieval tombs. It’s foreshadowing of his death, and that calm expression? He is content with that. He will give his all for her, and she knows it. And speaking of that sword? It was designed for this image, and never appears in the series, at least according to the artbook.Which means in all likelihood this is the Zagato of her memories, instead of the one who is currently fighting for her and against her (because they have become the same thing). And that Zagato - that kind, gentle person - is already dead, with her choice, with his own; that man’s morality and, really, sanity, cannot survive her choice.
THUS ENDS THE RAMBLING THIS TIME
